Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a common ailment, especially among tennis players, golfers, baseball players, violinists, office workers and homemakers.  Anyone who repeatedly extends the wrist (i.e. pulls the hand backwards) is at risk.

The outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender to touch.  Movements of the elbow hurt, especially those which involve lifting with the hand on top.  In recent years, cases of tennis elbow have also surfaced in children who play hand-held computer games for extended periods and in office workers who use a computer rarely but, when they do, type intensively for long hours.

The pain can be aggravated by gripping, heavy lifting and the simple tasks of daily living (such as grasping a coffee cup).  The dominant arm is affected 75% of the time.  The cause is unknown but the most generally accepted theory is that of a repetitive mechanical micro trauma caused by overuse.
